Born in 1485 Catherine was the youngest child of Spain's rulers Ferdinand and Isabella. She was betrothed and married Henry's older brother Arthur on November 14th, 1501 but after 6 short months of marriage Arthur fell sick and died. Fearing the loss of the dowry and support of Spain, Henry's father Henry the VII was able to arrange the marriage between Catherine and Henry the VIII. In 1509 they were wed. After several failed births, Catherine gave Henry a daughter in February of 1516 and they named her Mary, who later after her half brothers early death, became Queen Mary I. The marriage lasted until 1533 when Henry declared his marriage to his wife annulled in order to marry Anne Boleyn, whom he had fallen in love with and believed she could produce the male heir he so desired. Catherine died in 1536 of illness. She had been give the title Princess Dowager by Henry as a sign of respect.
