The Story of Pinocchio
|
The story of Pinocchio is one that is known by almost everyone in the world and one that is especially well suited for translation into a marionette. It has it's origins in Italy. In 1883 the author Carlo Collodi wrote the story The Adventures of Pinocchio. In it the woodcarver named Geppetto lived in a small rural town in Italy. He dreamed of having a son of his own one day and carved a little boy out of pine. He named him "Pinocchio" which is the Tuscan word meaning "Pine Nut". Pinocchio dreams of becoming a real boy and sets out on some adventures to figure out how to do that. The story has been told and retold thousands of times in every form of entertainment. One of the best known versions is Disney's classic Pinocchio in which the little "wooden head" is helped along the way by a beautiful blue fairy and his conscience in the form of a cricket, Jiminy Cricket.
