Types of Pelham Puppet

Pelham Puppets referred to its marionette puppets in 3 main size.

  • No 1: These were life size puppets
  • No 2: These were not true size display puppets
  • No 3: There were miniture puppets

There are several types of Pelham Puppet and the following list gives you details of the more common ones.

This is the standard stringed marionette type puppet with the painted wooden ball head, Normally 12" high strung on what is called the "Standard Control". This is a simple crossbar made of wood with a hook in the top to hang the puppet when not in use. After 1955 the control uses colored buffers as an ingenious idea to help untangling.

This type was the mainstay of the company for many years.

This is a range of puppets with an opening mouth which was added a more realistic effect. Also strung on a "standard control" with an additional buffer to enable the mouth to open and close.

This type puppet became a favorite of the customers for many years.

This is the puppet with the molded head. At first it was only used for character puppets such as TV stars, Cinderella and the Alice in Wonderland series but later many other characters were made.

Strung on a "standard control". The largest range of characters are of this type including the 1963 range

Over the years Pelham made many puppets for use as displays at shows or in shops. The ranged from 18 inch tall to a giant 10 feet tall Giraffe.

The controls differ to the size but most use a large double cross-bar which is hung from a strong spring.

In 1983 Pelham came out with the first puppets specially made for collectors. These were in a special dark blue box. each puppet was on a stand with a hardwood base

The first ones made were Henry the IIV and his six wives. The set was limited to 5000 world wide.

Stringed puppet made in the early 50's. In construction they are very similar to the SS type puppet but their feet are made from a ball cut in half.

Can be strung on a "standard control" or on a simple plywood control.
Should be found in a Brown box but could be found in the early yellow box.

A small range of puppets of magic roundabout characters that were operated by holding a rod from below.

A sort of a puppet on a stick!.

There are the 6 rod puppets all from the range hit UK TV show the Magic Roundabout. They are Zebedee, Mr Rusty and Florence Mr & Mrs Dougal and Brian the Snail.

A range of simple stringed puppets designed for very young children They use a simple single bar control.

The human characters hands are connected to the end of the control by string and an the head is connected to the center of the control by elastic or string. If elastic is used, when a child moved the puppet it would bounce into action.
